Typical lifespan of pool screen mesh, spline, aluminum frames and doors in Florida, what shortens it, and the signs it is time to replace.

In South Florida, standard pool screen mesh typically lasts about 8โ12 years, while the aluminum frame can last decades with maintenance. The screen is the part that wears out first, and how fast depends on sun exposure, salt air, storms and tree cover.
| Component | Typical Lifespan | What Shortens It |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 18ร14 fiberglass mesh | 8โ12 years | UV, storms, pets, tree debris |
| 20ร20 or No-See-Um mesh | Often at or above the high end of 8โ12 years | UV, storms, restricted airflow in heavy wind |
| Spline (the rubber cord) | Roughly 8โ15 years | Heat and UV drying it out, wind flexing |
| Aluminum frame | 20โ30+ years with care | Salt air, standing moisture, impact damage |
| Screen door hardware | Roughly 5โ10 years | Heavy daily use, loose hinges, corrosion |
These are general ranges, not guarantees. Individual enclosures vary widely.
Sun and heat. UV breaks down the coating on fiberglass mesh and dries out spline. West- and south-facing sides usually fade first.
Salt air near the coast. Frames in coastal areas such as Hollywood oxidize faster, showing white chalky film and pitting at connectors.
Storms and wind load. Repeated high winds fatigue mesh and loosen spline, so screens can pop out even without a direct hit. See what to do after storm damage.
Tree cover. Falling limbs and heavy leaf litter, common in areas like Plantation and Davie, add impact damage and hold moisture against the aluminum.
Mesh that looks gray or washed out instead of dark charcoal. Panels that sag or bow. Small tears that keep appearing in new places. Screen that pops out of the spline groove. Brittle mesh that tears when pressed. If more than about 30% of panels show these signs, a full rescreen usually makes more sense than patching. See rescreen or repair.
Rinse the frame with fresh water, trim branches overhanging the roof, clear leaves from roof panels, fix small tears early, and treat oxidation before it pits the metal (aluminum restoration). Our seasonal maintenance checklist lays this out month by month.
Standard 400โ600 sq ft enclosures typically run $900โ$1,600 for a full rescreen, with larger enclosures costing more. Premium mesh adds roughly 15โ30% to panel cost. See the full cost guide.
